Weekend Recap

What a weekend! We got so incredibly lucky that tropical storm Rafael magically skipped over us! It could have been a total wash out otherwise! Also, after seeing some pictures of the Virgin Islands post-storm, it makes me grateful that it wasn't us, because the flooding and damage would look exactly the same.

Done!

Woohooo it's over!!! Clinical pathology went really well today too! I wish I could just keep my scantron grade and ignore what will be added in later from the short answer questions because that's definitely going to pull me down a little bit, but oh well. The best part of this story is that I slept until 3p yesterday, was awake for less than 12 hours, and definitely did not study nearly as much as I should have. Lesson learned. Sleep more, get sick, study less, better grades. Hmmmm probably just got lucky!

This evening we went out to a lovely restaurant to celebrate called The Beach House. It was pretty pricy but super duper delicious! I had a yummy chicken dish with Parmesan sauce and bacon bits (yum!!!) with rice and veggies. Definitely a winner! We all got delicious desserts, mine was a layered ice cream cake with sparklers! Anything with chocolate is always a guaranteed win for me!

One of our school clubs had a fundraiser at a local bar/restaurant which included a "sexy legs" competition. Two guys from each term got up and performed their interpretation of sexy legs for a minute each. Hilarious! We have some serious talent here at SGU ;). Now I am off to bed to enjoy a weekend of nothingness (okay, there will probably be some ocular path but only because I'm 4 days behind haha). We may or may not get a ton of rain, we'll see what Rafael has in store for us.

Bronchitis

Three exams down, one more to go! Too bad we're saving the "best" for last - clinical pathology. At least I really like clin path, despite the professor making the exams really ugly!

Someone was very kind and shared a lovely bronchitis with me. Yay. I've only had bronchitis one other time in my life, but it certainly wasn't fun or pretty! I think I ended up on something like 9 pills a day and assorted liquid drugs. I'm hoping to avoid that this time, especially since this time I'm in Grenada! It doesn't at all soothe me to remember we have a medical school here either! I was lucky to find a liquid guaifenesin combo today at a drug store though. And I guess on the plus side, I am a very well rested person this week haha!

TIG Part 2

I told you yesterday that we did not get dairy products at the grocery store this week because the boat broke. Here is my roommate's idea of how this happened:

Also - accomplishment of the month: putting clean sheets back on my bed after sleeping in a pile of blankets for 2 weeks. I am (a) that lazy, and (b) it is that annoying to get them back on the bed!

TIG

Went to the grocery store yesterday, they had no dairy products or orange juice. -TIG

I can't remember if I've mentioned it before, but TIG stands for This Is Grenada. Just a bit of a joke for us islanders.

So you're reading no dairy or orange juice at a grocery store??? Well let me take a moment to remind you that these things are imported weekly on a boat that arrives on Thursdays. Okay wow, you say. But wait. If you went yesterday, that would have been Friday. So by all reasons and theory, the store should have been stocked! Well yes. And this is precisely why I go on Fridays. But what happens when the boat breaks down and doesn't arrive?? No dairy or orange juice, and no re-stocking of sold out products! : D. So yes, TIG.

Anyhow, one midterm down, 3 to go. This week is going to stink. Pathology, virology, clinical pathology. I think I'm going to start praying for a miracle right now! However, I'd just like to mention that of all the places in the world to study veterinary medicine, there is no place I'd rather do it than at SGU. As my friends at home post about fall weather and first snows, I can't help but look out my window at tropical paradise and grin. I LOVE walking outside to 85 degrees of pure tropical beauty and sunshine every day. There is no place I'd rather be building my future than here. Happy Weekend!

"Shoats"

Hello all, just thought I'd pop by and share a brief story. Exams started today...yikes. Cardiovascular pharm...gee that was...fun...really can't wait to see that again on the final...

Anyhow, I was on my way to the clinic for a shift this evening when a rather large flock of sheep/group of goats - I'm not sure which they were crossed my path. OH! Idea, I shall refer to them as "shoats," a term introduced to us by our clinical pathology professor for referring the the small ruminants wandering the island. So these "shoats" suddenly decided the grass looked greener on the other side, and one by one they frantically began running across the road. This is not a very wide road, I reckon two cars could pass side by side comfortable with breathing room, but it's not super wide or anything. As they began running after one another, they started to hold up traffic. I was very impressed with how patient everyone was with the "shoats." There were plenty of babies to stare at - so cute!! I'm sure about 10 minutes after they switched sides, they went back to the original side as the foliage looked rather limited on my side of the street! Wish I had had my camera with me to take pictures :(.

Not-So-Rare Thunderstorms

So remember when I told you last weekend that thunderstorms here are rare? Well Grenada has set out to prove me wrong! Lots of rain and storms since then. Although from what I've heard, this is new Grenadian behavior (coming from someone who has been here a few years!). So we shall see what the rest of the fall brings! The lightning flashes are brilliant while the thunder is a deep, throaty rumble very different from suburban storms.
